When water is properly administered, the result is lower consumption of both water and energy, with consequent increases in production efficiency. DUO Equipment have developed a water management and silt control system for aggregate processing which is fully compliant with all current environmental and health and safety legislation and completely eliminates the necessity of lagoons.

This system is based upon material being fed to the aggregate washing plant to remove the silt. In the past these silts would have been stored on site and moved several times until they had drained sufficiently to allow the solid material to be disposed to a landfill site. The cost of disposal to landfill means the less water that is contained within the silt the better.

The process allows the silt water from the wash plant to be fed into a thickener where flocculent is added. The addition of flocculent is controlled automatically which controls the amount required and guarantees a clean water supply from the thickener. The fine solids congeal and fall towards the bottom of the thickener and the clean water decants over the top to a clean water storage tank for reuse on the aggregate wash plant. Potable mains water is used as a top up to replace any water lost in the system through evaporation or in some of the materials.

The thickened solids can then be drawn from the bottom of the thickener tank with a proportion reintroduced to the sand to maximise the material recovery and minimise the amount of silt which has to be disposed. The balance is fed into a buffer tank and then to a plate press. The operation of the plate press is fully automatic and produces a dry filter cake which can be managed easily. The cake can either be reintroduced into sub base type materials or easily transported off site to land fill sites for restoration.

This process ensures the most efficient operation possible in this application providing immediate cost savings by significantly reducing the handling of the silt, the volume of water contained in the moisture of the silt, and maximising the sand grading.
The silt management system, according to the requirements of each application can be specifically designed and sized to minimise operator input and maintain low running costs.
The system includes automatic flocculent mixing and dosing plant with a control system that minimises use of flocculent including an automatic anti-clog system for the thickeners and discharge valves.

The complete system is fully automated and only requires an operator to add flocculent powder occasionally and remove the pressed silt cake using a loading shovel. All sludge fed into the thickening tanks from the aggregate wash plant feed is constantly monitored every 50 seconds. This allows the system to automatically adjust the feed rate of the flocculent solution thereby guaranteeing clean water for re-washing and minimising the amount of flocculent required. Once in the thickener the silt settles to the bottom of the cone and is automatically discharged into the sludge tank when the density is 35% solids.

This is constantly monitored so that a consistent feed is continuously pumped to the plate presses. The flocculent mixing and dosing system has a continuous supply of filtered clean water and automatically mixes a batch of flocculent solution when the level drops. An operator only has to add the powder to a storage bin.

DUO Equipment in sizing any water treatment plant would consider such factors as the silt content of the raw material, settlement rate, throughput and site drainage.The system can also be added to existing washing operations.
